Television#
TV Services#
The College does not provide televisions. Requirements for TV: There are aerial sockets (for access to terrestrial channels) in the flats and suites but not in the single bedrooms. Members may not erect satellite dishes, TV aerials or any other TV receiving equipment anywhere either inside or outside the College buildings.
TV Licensing: In the UK; if you use a TV or any other device to watch or record TV programmes (e.g. a freeview set-top box, a youview recorder or a computer with a TV tuner card) you need to have a TV License. A TV License is also required if you are using a television catch-up service such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4 or My5. It makes no difference if you are watching the TV shows on a television, computer, tablet or a phoneyou still need a TV license. You are required by law to have one.
It is illegal to watch TV in the UK without purchasing a TV License. Each bedroom in the College requires its own TV License. For more information about TV Licenses, please visit https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk
Licences can be obtained online from the TV licensing website or from any Post Office. The fee can be paid annually or monthly. You are not covered by the College and are personally liable for prosecution if you are operating a television or watching catchup services like BBC iPlayer without a licence. Other TV Options: Goodenough College has satellite dishes that provide Sky TV (including Sky Sports) in Freddie’s and BT Sport in the G-Bar. There is also an additional TV in the Members’ Common Room (near the Media Room in London House.)
Alternatives to TV: A TV Licence is not required for watching internet streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ or Discovery+ although a subscription fee is required to access these services. If you want some free alternatives, there’s always Youtube, Twitch, Rumble, Bitchute and Vimeo.
